The donation of Monte della Verna to Francesco di Assisi in Chiusi della Verna
La donazione del Monte della Verna a Francesco d'Assisi a Chiusi della Verna
Penultimate weekend of July. The event recalls the journey that Count Orlando Catani, lord of the Castle of Chiusi in Casentino, made in 1214, to the forest of La Verna where, in the meantime, Francis of Assisi had risen to gather, pray and do penance. The story begins the previous year, May 8, 1213, at the castle of San Leo in Montefeltro, when Francis had the opportunity to meet Count Orlando Catani. The count was so struck by the charm of this friar, who proposed to give him as a gift the Monte della Verna, if he had accepted it. Francis therefore went up to La Verna in 1214. The historical re-enactment tells the story of the meeting between Francesco and the Count in 1214. The parade starts from Chiusi della Verna, and is composed of an evocative costume procession with over one hundred people, horses and riders and animals. When you reach the Quadrant of the Sanctuary in front of the Basilica, the procession then continues inside the forest. For some years the re-enactment has been enriched by a medieval enogastronomic path that takes place before the re-enactment, on Saturday evening.
